Update on the peepers

So Saturday's C1KC was my first longer ride wearing my contacts.  They were in for nearly 11 hours of riding and probably over 15 hours for the day.

I was kinda worried about my eyes drying out (and forgot to take eye drops with me) but found that as long as I kept remembering to blink often enough I really didn't have an issue.  Funny how remembering to blink can be a bit of an issue when concentrating on certain sections of the ride...

One of the things that the optometrist mentioned when I first started talking contacts with him was an increased sensitivity to light.  I have definitely found this to hold true, especially when driving or riding.  Stopping to change to my tinted visor in Pemberton was well worth it stopped the squinting.  The tinted visor stayed on for the rest of the day.

Funnily enough Meanie was cursing his glasses when we got to Upper Hutt and I had to have a little smile to myself.  I was especially glad to not be wearing glasses when we rode over the Rimutakas as there was a bit of fog as we started the descent as well as the odd spit of rain - the exact conditions that have caused me problems (particularly at slow speed on the DL) in the past.  It was good not to have to worry about fogging and also knowing that if I did experience fogging I could always pop the visor and not get rain on my glasses...

So, very happy with how things went - I even got them in pretty smartly at 4am in the morning...

  1. your experience with contact lenses has me thinking again how nice it would be to not fight fogging on one's glasses....

  2. I am glad the contact are working out.

Before I was a legal assistant, I was an optometric assistant for three years and marveled at how easily people could put them in and take them out. I tried them once and could take them out, but couldn't put them in for the life of me.

    1. I've struggled for a while and I'm much better at getting them in now. Getting them out can be a bit more of a problem.

  3. I think about them whenever dealing with foggy glasses. I suspect that they are much improved since I last wire them but I used to feel cluster phobic after a long day wearing them.

    Glad they're working out.

    1. My eyes definitely feel a bit dryer by the time I take them out but generally after perhaps a few minutes getting used to them in the morning, I forget that I'm wearing them. Just gotta remember to blink...

  4. Well done Andrew, I used contacts for a while a few years ago before I was riding and loved them but they dried out my eyes so much that it started to become painful to wear them and I stopped. I decided recently to try them again just for when I am riding a big ride thinking that not having them in every day would be better and yep it is. Like you I have to remember the drops and blinking definately helps, it's worth it on the bike as it just makes life so much easier.

I have much more trouble taking them out than putting them in, I scratched my eye once taking them out and damn that hurts!
